My beloved Aloe Vera plant that was old when I inherited her 16 years ago is blooming for the first time. Is it like a Century plant that only blooms once a century? Is it a portent of good tidings or at least of something of rare beauty? I’ve never seen an aloe plant blossom before and it has brought joy and lightness to me. I thought you might like to see the pictures.

This is the beginnings of the bud on February 23, 2012.

The pod-like, tiny trumpet-like blossoms are orange and yellow and have a faintly citrus smell, like what the color orange might smell like. The mature flower is milky sticky. I imagine if this plant were outdoors on a sunny day, a hummingbird might find it an exquisite treat.

Happy Spring to you and may your life blossom with rare beauty, goodness and light.

Many blessings,

Barbara J. Semple
